United Voice fundraising event~

From 30th Nov to 6th Dec, I have joined United Voice(UV) as a volunteer to complete my community service. For your information, United Voice is the first society in Malaysia that is led by people with learning disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism and Attention Deficit Disorder.

In this Christmas, United Voice has launched a charity event named 'A Gift to One is A Blessing to Another' at Subang Parade and Mid Valley. In this event, Su-Xian, Eugene, Yin Yee and I are involved in the morning shift (9am to 2pm) whereas Joe Jen and Yee Yein are involved in the afternoon shift (1.30pm to 6pm). We were there to help in giving out brochures and selling out the products which were all made by people with learning disabilities. The product to be sold involves homemade cookies with four flavours, handicrafts (eg. magnet, bookmark, gift tag, greeting cards, woven shawls and pencil case), soap and T-shirts.

SPCA

SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is an animal welfare organisation and it is located at Ampang, Selangor. I went there with my friends by LRT and reached there around 9am. I had been there for three days. Our job is to clean the cages of cats and dogs, replace the newspaper in the cage and clean the floor. Around 10.30am, it is the lunchtime for the dogs. So, we helped to distribute the food to all the dogs.

On the first visit, I was frighten when seeing so many dogs surrounds me. At first, I was really afraid of touching and approaching them. But, after interacting with them for few hours, I became more 'brave' to play with them. So, I would say that this is really a new experience to me.

Mobile Clinic

On 21st October 2012, a health project was held in Brickfield. This event was organised by Lions Club of Serdang and UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) exclusively for Sri Lankan refugees. Around 7.30am, we reached our destination and started setting up the counter as well as arranging the tables and chairs. The screening available on that day includes blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, dental checking, pap smear, hearing and many more. I was assigned to the dental checking counter. My job was to assist the dentist by jotting down what he said under the column of comment. He told me that it was important for his future reference. I'm happy that I'm able to take part in this meaningful project to help a lot of people who really need our help.

Zoo Negara

I went to Zoo Negara together with my course mates as volunteers for six days. The working hour for full-day is from 8am to 4pm. There are many sections in Zoo. Every time we went there, we will be separated into a few groups. Every group will be assigned to different sections.

On the first day, me, Yin Yee, Yoke Li and Sasi were brought to the Bear section. Afterwards, we were separated into another three groups. I followed a keeper to clean the bears' cages, which includes sweeping away the leftovers, poops and cleaning the floor. There are around 10 cages for bears in Zoo Negara. We spent the whole morning to clean all their cages. It was really tiring! After that, we continue our work by cleaning Tapir area. Before my lunch breaks, I have a chance to feed the otters with small fishes! My job after lunch breaks was to assist the worker to feed the bears with fruits, vegetables and honey.

On the second volunteering day, me and Yin Yee were assigned to the Ape Centre. This time, we are not allowed to get into their cage. First of all, we were asked to clean the surrounding area by sweeping the floor. After that, we help the zoo keeper to prepare and cut the food such as papaya, banana and carrot. Next, we have to make sure that all visitors do not bring in their food or drinks. The work to be done in this section is the lightest and easiest as compared to other sections.

On the third visit, Yin Yee, Jun Rong and I were brought to the Savannah section. Then, three of us were separated and each of us followed a zoo keeper to clean different area. My job is to clean the area where rhinoceros are. We swept away their leftovers and poops, cleaned the floor and feeding them. In the afternoon, Yin Yee and I helped in distributing the food to the animals such as giraffes and zebras.

On the forth day, Yin Yee, Joe Jen, Jun Rong and I were assigned to the Holding Area section. When new animals arrived, they will be quarantined in this area for some time. We were then separated into two groups.  Joe Jen and I were in a group. We cleaned the cage of goats and prepared the lunch for animals such as otters, bears, leopard, hornbill and goat. At last, I'm so happy to have the chance to feed the baby gout with milk.

On Day 5 in Zoo, me and Joe Jen were assigned to the Children's World department. After sweeping the dried leaves at the surrounding area, it started raining. So, we cleaned up the rabbits' cages and the floor. In the afternoon, we prepared the food for rabbits, goat, poney and many more.
